The history of area code 508
Area code 508 was created as a split from area code 617 on July 16, 1988. Prior to that, area code 617 served from the Western end of Worcester County to Boston, The Cape and Islands, and the South Coast.
On September 1, 1997, there was another split, but this time for the area code 508. It was split with the area code 978 being assigned to service the northern part of the state.
Since May 2, 2001, an overlay area code 774 was introduced to the same areas with area code 508. As of 2001, the state has applied the 10-digit dialing system.
Can I get my own number with area code 508?
You can't do that, unfortunately. As of 2001, there was an overlay that replaced the area code 508 with the area code 774. Since it was done to convert to the 10-digit dialing system, there are no landlines now with the area code 508, but instead with area code 774.
What do I do if I received a call from area code 508?
Since area code 508 has stopped working since 2001 and was replaced with area code 774. It is highly unlikely that you would receive a call with the area code 508. However, if you do receive such a call, it is recommended that you do not answer that and block the number as it is probably a scammer using software to mask their original area code with a fake one. Being vigilant with unknown numbers and callers is the best way to deal with suspicious area codes and keep your information safe. And it is important to never share any personal information like your address, social security number, bank account number, etc. with any unknown caller.
How to block a number with area code 508?
Blocking an unwanted call differs according to your phone's operating system (iPhone or Android).
To block unwanted calls from area code 508, do the following steps:
If you have an Android phone:
· Go to the Recent Calls menu.
· Click Details (besides the number you want to block)
· Click Block Number, and Voila. You won't receive any calls from that number anymore.
If you have an iPhone:
· Go to your Recent Calls menu.
· Choose the number that you want to block with the displaying the area code 6508.
· Click the encircled (i) in it.
· Click more information from the next menu.
· Click Block this number, and just like that you have blocked that number you won't receive any unwanted calls from it once again.
