It becomes especially difficult when we receive a call from an unknown area code. That is why here we are going to define some area codes, where they come from and are they associated with scammers or not.
Where is the area code 718 located?
The area code 718 services the boroughs of New York City. It has served the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Marble Hill, and Staten Island for the past 36 years since 1984. However, Manhattan is excluded from that area code, as it has a different area code of 212.
The History of area code 718
After the establishment of the North American Numbering System in the year 1947, the area code 212 was established to serve all of New York City. In February 1984, a split happened to prevent the exhaustion of the telephone numbers. New York City was slotted into two areas, Manhattan retaining the area code 212, and Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island with the area code 718.
It is projected that the current area codes will be exhausted by 2027.
Do scammers use area code 718 in their calls?
It is very unlikely for scammers to use area code 718. The 718 area code is mentioned in many songs like 1998 2 Skinnee J's song, and in movies like Sex and the City. It is considered a prestigious thing among New Yorkers to have a landline with the area code 718, as it is one of the firsts to be used in New York City. Moreover, establishments and businesses having area code 718 are considered trusted ones, as to have that area code you need to be running since the 80s.
Can I have my own landline with a 718 area code?
Unfortunately, as of April 16, 2011. The area code 718 has ceased to be used. IT was overlayed by a new area code of 929. It was assigned to 23.4 million numbers serving around 6.7 million people.
Is it possible to stop receiving calls from a number with area code 718?
Blocking an unwanted call differs according to your phone's operating system (iPhone or Android).
To block unwanted calls from area code 718, do the following steps:
If you have an Android phone:
· Go to the Recent Calls menu.
· Click Details (besides the number you want to block)
· Click Block Number, and Voila. You won't receive any calls from that number anymore.
If you have an iPhone:
· Go to your Recent Calls menu.
· Choose the number that you want to block with the displaying the area code 718.
· Click the encircled (i) in it.
· Click more information from the next menu.
Click Block this number, and just like that you have blocked that number you won't receive any unwanted calls from it once again.
