Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a professional footballer at Arsenal football club, currently on loan at Southampton. He is a product of Arsenal’s youth system, having risen through the ranks at London Colney. Maitland-Niles joined the academy when he was 6 years old, playing for their youth teams before making his professional debut in a Champions League game against Galatasaray at 17. He became the youngest ever player to play for Arsenal behind Jack Wilshere.
The following season he went on loan to Ipswich Town. Maitland-Niles's season started well, and he was named the club’s player of the month in September. However, towards the end of the season, his game time was limited due to injury and competition for places.
After his loan spell, he returned to the Emirates and began to compete for a place in the first team. This would be Arsène Wenger’s final season at the club, and he would play Maitland-Niles regularly at right-back.
The following year, Unai Emery took over as manager and started Maitland-Niles during his first game in charge of the club. Just 35 minutes into the first half, he broke his leg and would be out for a few months. During his absence, Héctor Bellerín had suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament so when Maitland-Niles returned, he played as a right-back for the rest of the season.
In 2019, Mikel Arteta took over as manager for the season in which Maitland-Niles was selected to start in their FA Cup final win. The following season Maitland-Niles struggled to make the first team and in 2021, he went on loan to West Bromwich Albion. The next two seasons would be similar with loans to Roma and Southampton.
Maitland-Niles made his international debut for England under-17s in 2014. Since then, he has gone on to play for the under-18s, -19s and -20s. Gareth Southgate selected him for the first team for two UEFA Nations League matches. On 8th September 2020, he made his debut for the senior team while playing against Denmark.
