David Portnoy is an American internet celebrity, and a sports media figure. He is the founder of the sports and pop culture blog digital media company, Barstool Sports.
Early Life
David Scott Portnoy was born on March 22, 1977, and grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts. He graduated with a degree in education at the University of Michigan in the year 1999.
Career
As a fresh graduate, Portnoy first started working in an IT market research film, Yankee Group. In 1999, he founded Barstool Sports as a print publication. The website was launched in 2007 and later on became a popular sports media. The Barstool Sports garnered several stakeholders, and Portnoy continues to run the site while keeping the creativity of the content under control.
Portnoy created an internet show called "One Bite with Davey Pageviews". The show consists of a content of him reviewing pizza starting in every pizza place in Manhattan. Celebrities and athletes also appear as guests in his videos.
Portnoy was detained in Mercedes-Benz Stadium holding cell, and was prohibited to attend the game due to creating a fake passes for a press event.
In January 2016, Peter Chernin of The Chernin Group has the majority stake in Barstool Sports for $10-15 million, and increased his stake at 60% in 2018, by investing $20-25 million. Eventually, The Chernin Group's stake was reduced to 36% due to Penn National Gaming's investment of $450 million, acquiring 36% stake in Barstool Sports.
