John developed the idea for a clothing company intended for young men. He started his company FUBU in his mother's house in Queens, where his mother supported him to take over his house to grow his business and taught him how to sew. John noticed that wool ski hats were popular at that time and was sold for $20, which he thought was overpriced. When he went on that day, he started sewing and made around 90 hats wit the help of his next-door neighbor. They made $800 in a single day in 1992 for selling their homemade hats for $10 in Jamaica Avenue. John started selling screen-printed T-shirts after their homemade hats.

To generate a start-up capital, John and his mother mortgaged their house for $100,000, and recruited his longtime friends J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin into the business. They began sewing the "FUBU" logo onto T-shirts, hockey jerseys, and sweatshirts. Their company was viewed as a large clothing brand despite of being a small company. Several stores started requesting for their brand and between the year 1992-1994, he received a $300,000 worth in orders. John and his mother had to take out a second mortgage of his mother's house for the sake of fulfilling the orders. Despite of getting turned down by several banks for a loan, his mother used their last money to make an advertisement in the NY Times, and as a result FUBU got a deal with Samsung Textile and letting them to complete their orders. For the past several years in the business industry, FUBU made an earnings of more than $6 billion in global sales.
