Cerrone was forced to live with his grandparents after his parents got divorced when he was in high school. He went to Air Academy High School and began training for professional bullfighting. At the age of 20, he trained for kickboxing and taekwondo. He was undefeated during his amateur career with 13-0. Cerrone also trained for Muay Thai and is undefeated too.
