Harrison Ford is an American actor, and pilot. In 2019, he was at no.4 on the list of highest-grossing domestic box office of all time with a total of more than $5.1 billion grosses of his films, and $9.3 billion worldwide. He is best known for portraying the role in the epic space opera film Star Wars in 1977, as "Han Solo", and as "Indiana Jones".
Early Life
Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Dorothy, a former radio actress, and John William Ford, an advertising executive and former actor.
He graduated from Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois in 1960. Ford's voice was the first student voice broadcast on his high school's radio station. In college, he was a philosophy major at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. In order to overcome his shyness, he took a drama class in his final quarter of his senior year and became interested with acting. Ford appeared in several local theater productions, and traveled to Los Angeles to audition for a radio voice-over job which he did not succeeded.
Career
After he decided to stay in Los Angeles, he landed on a $150 per-week contract with the production company, Columbia Pictures. Ford had several uncredited speaking roles, before he was finally credited in the 1967 Western film "A Time for Killing". In 1960s-1970s, he appeared in several television series playing minor roles in films like Ironside, The F.B.I., Gunsmoke, Kung Fu, and American Style.
Ford became a self-taught professional carpenter to support his then-wife and two sons. Casting director and film producer Fred Roos secured Ford an audition for George Lucas' next film project, American Graffiti.
He started to received bigger role films and got his first starring film role for the epic space opera film Star War as portraying the character "Han Solo". In the 1981 action-adventure film "Raiders of the Lost Ark", Ford starred as the leading actor and portrayed the character Indiana Jones. The film was a huge success and became as the highest-grossing film of the year. From the year 1977 to 1997, he appeared in total of fourteen films.
In the late 1990s, Ford appeared in several commercially disappointing films. Despite of this happening, his 2000 film What Lies Beneath grossed more than $155 million in the US and $291 million worldwide. He was listed as the richest male actor in the world in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records. In 2008, the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released, which received positive feedbacks and became the second highest-grossing film worldwide in that year.
Ford's performance in the American biographical sports film "42" as Branch Rickey received praises and a nomination as best supporting actor for the Satellite Awards. In 2015, he co-starred in the romantic drama "The Age of Adeline" with American stress Blake Lively. The Star Wars sequel "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released in 2015, and Ford reprised his role as Han Solo. The film was a huge success just like its past film. Alcon Entertainment announced on February 2015, that Ford would reprise his character as "Rick Deckard" in Blade Runner 2049 which is a sequel to the 1982 film, Blade Runner. As they estimated a grossing of $400 million, the film only grossed over $259 million worldwide. He had his first voice role in an animated film, The Secret Life of Pets 2 as a dog named Rooster.
Personal Life
Ford was married to his first wife Mary Marquardt from 1964 to 1979, and had two sons. In March 1983, Ford married his second wife Melissa Mathison, a screenwriter. The two had a son, who is an actor and musician, and a daughter who is an actress. They got separated in 2000, and their divorced got finalized in the year 2004.
Ford started dating actress Calista Flockhart after they met at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. The two got married on June 15, 2010 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They had a son, Liam, which Flockhart adopted before he met Ford.
In 2009, Ford signed a petition for the release of film director Roman Polanski, as he was arrested in relation to his 1977 charge for drugging and raping a 13 year old girl.
