Early Life
Jackman was born on October 12, 1968 in Sydney, Australia. His parents divorced when he was eight years old and his mother moved back to England. He went to Pymble Public School then attended Knox Grammar School. He finished college at the University of Technology in 1991 with a BA in Mass Communications. He discovered his talent for acting when he took drama classes in his final year in college. After college, he spent a year at the Actors Center in Sydney.
He turned down the casting offer for the soap opera Neighbours. He chose to attend the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He wants to deepen his knowledge about acting. He got his first role as Curly in Oklahoma! In 1998.
His first job as a professional actor was as Kevin Jones on Correlli. Jones is a tattooed convict who suffered brain damage while in police custody. Correlli was a 10-part drama series in Australia shown on ABC. He also worked in Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard in 1996. He starred in the films Paperback Hero and Erskineville Kings.
