Joe Namath is an American former professional football player in the 1960's and 1970's whose position is a quarterback in the in the American Football League and National Football League. He played football in the University of Alabama under the supervision of coach Bryant. Namath was an AFL icon and played with the New York Jets. He was ranked number 96 on The Sporting News list of 100 Greatest Football Players.
Joe Namath's Early Life
Joe Namath was born on May 31, 1943 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of four sons and an older adopted sister. He is the son of Rose and Janos "John" Andrew Namath who are both Catholic.
Namath attended Beaver Falls High School, in which he showcase his love and expertise in sports. In 1961, he graduated high school and has received numerous offers from Major League Basketball. Despite the offers, he chooses football because his mother wanted him to get a college education.
Joe Namath's Career
During his college years at the University of Alabama, Namath led his team to a National Championship. His coach, Bryant, called him "the greatest athlete I ever coached". During his senior year, Namath got a knee injury and later designated him class 4-F for the military draft, deferment from service during the Vietnam War.
In his early career, the Jets lose the fight in their first six games but won five of the last eight of a fourteen-game season and Namath was named the AFL Rookie of the Year. He became the first professional quarterback to pass 4,000 yards when he threw for 4,007 yards. In 1969, the win against the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III was considered Namath's high point in career.
In 1969, Joe Namath was a successful host in The Joe Namath Show. He starred in several films, television series and has been invited as guest on numerous television shows.
Joe Namath's Personal Life
Joe Namath met Deborah Mays when she was still 22 and he was 44 in 1983. A year after, they got married and had two children, Jessica and Olivia. 16 years later, the couple decided to have a divorced. On 2003, Namath garnered several negative feedback from the public after he consumed too much alcohol during a day that was dedicated for the Jet's announcement of their All-Time team. Several weeks later, he went to an outpatient alcoholism treatment program.
Joe Namath's Legacy
Joe Namath nicknamed "Broadway Joe" has been given to him by Sherman Plunkett, a Jet's teammate. He appeared in television advertisements both during and after his career. All of the commercials contributed to his becoming a pop-culture icon. He also serve as an unofficial guest speaker and goodwill ambassador for the Jets.
Namath finish his career with the Los Angeles Rams. He was elected a Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He retired after playing 143 games over 13 years. He played for three division champions in 1968 and 1969 and earned one league championship which is the AFL Championship and one Super Bowl.
