Marquinhos is a Brazilian winger signed for Arsenal who is currently on loan with Norwich City. The young Brazilian has also made appearances for his native country’s under-sixteen and under-seventeen teams.
Marquinhos was born on 7th April 2003 in São Paulo, Brazil. He rose through São Paulo’s youth system to join the senior team at the age of 18.
Coming on as a 78th-minute substitute, Marquinhos made his debut for São Paulo in a July 2021 1-0 win against EC Bahia. He went on to make an additional thirty-two appearances for his childhood club.
The skilled teenager helped his team win the Campeonato Paulista in 2021. His ongoing success eventually led to the English Premier League side, Arsenal, signing him in a £3 million deal. The deal is for four years, with the option to extend for an additional year.
Marquinhos was the first player signed by Arsenal during the 2022 transfer window. This was followed by the signing of his future teammates, such as Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner, Gabriel Jesus, and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Before Arsenal he played for São Paulo and when the Gunners came knocking São Paulo were allegedly reluctant to let their rising star go. Their hand was, however, forced because waiting would have given Marquinhos the option to leave the Brazilian side without the team benefiting financially.
Marquinhos’ move to Arsenal was marred by controversy. Wolverhampton Wanderers alleged that they already had a pre-contract agreement with Marquinhos before he signed with Arsenal.
In an ironic twist of fate, Arsenal defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 a mere six months after allegedly poaching their prospective player. Marquinhos himself remained on the bench for that particular match.
Marquinhos kicked off his Arsenal career in style by helping his new club defeat Zürich 2-1 on 8th September 2022. He scored one goal and was instrumental in assisting teammate, Eddie Nketiah, to score the other.
For the 2022/2023 season, Marquinhos made five more appearances for Arsenal before being sent out on loan to Norwich City for the second half of the season.
The nineteen-year-old winger has not yet played for Brazil’s senior team. However, the Brazil national team is one of the world’s best international sides, but Marquinhos is still young and may have the opportunity to do so in the future.
Marquinhos has played for both the under-sixteen and under-seventeen Brazilian teams. This saw him go up against formidable teams such as Argentina.
Marquinhos is a versatile player. He plays both wing and centre-forward and has been praised for his outstanding pace. While he is comfortable on either wing, he prefers the right, which allows him to take full advantage of his left foot when he cuts inside.
