Early Life
Martin Scorsese was afflicted by a terrible asthma when he was a child. He spent most of his time in movie theaters because his condition limited him from playing sports and taking part in any outdoor games. This stage in his life developed his passion for cinema.
Raised in a Catholic environment, Scorsese has entertained entering priesthood but later didn’t pursue. He enrolled in NYU's Washington Square College and took up B.A. in English in 1964 and earned his M.F.A., film, from New York University's School of the Arts.
While in university, Scorsese has done a lot of short films including “What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?” and “It's Not Just You, Murray!” along with “The Big Shave” his most famous short film.
Two years after marrying his first wife, Laraine Marie Brennan, Scorsese made his first feature-length film entitled “Who's That Knocking at My Door?”. Along with his fellow students who then became long-term collaborators.
In 1970, Scorsese became an assistant director. Through a fellow director, he met actor Robert De Niro whom later starred in his breakthrough film Mean Streets where De Niro won Best Supporting Actor in the National Society of Film Critics award for his role as "Johnny Boy" Civello. The film was also selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1997.

Martin has been married five times. He was first married to Laraine Marie Brennan in 1965. They have been together for 6 years until they got divorced in 1971. They had a daughter named Catherine who was named after his mother.
Following the divorce of his first wife, Scorsese married his second wife the writer Julia Cameron in 1976 which eventually lasted only a year. They also had a daughter named Domenica Cameron-Scorsese.
A year after his divorced with Cameron, Scorsese married actress Isabella Rossellini. They were together for four years until their divorce in 1982.
Three years later, Scorsese had his third marriage to an American film producer Barbara De Fina in 1985. Their marriage lasted for 7 years. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1991.
After four failed marriages, Scorsese married again in 1999 to his current spouse of twenty years, Helen Schermerhorn Morris. They have a daughter named Francesca who appeared in his movies, The Departed and The Aviator.
