Nipsey Hussle was an American rapper, entrepreneur, and activist, known for his numerous mixtapes. He independently released his first mixtape, Slauson Boy Volume 1. Hussle also launched the Marathon Clothing store, which he founded together with partners Karen Civil, Carless, and his brother Samiel Asghedom.
Early Life
Nipsey Hussle's birth name is Ermias Joseph Asghedom, and was born on August 15, 1985 in Crenshaw, Los Angeles, California. His parents, Dawit Asghedom and Angelique Smith. He has a brother, Samuel, and a sister, Samantha. He attended Alexander Hamilton High School, but dropped out before graduating. He left home at the age of 14, and joined the local, Rollin 60's Neighborhood Crips, a sub-group of the larger Crips gang based in his home neighborhood of Crenshaw. Hussle's father took him and his brother on a trip to Eritrea, East Africa for 3 months in the year 2004, when he was 19. The trip inspired him to become a community activist with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Career
Hussle independently released his first mixtape, Slauson Boy Volume 1, in December 2005, to moderate local success. It led him to signed to Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records. He released his first two installments in his Bullets Ain't Got No Name series of mixtapes on 2008, and helped him bring his music to a much more larger audience.
In 2009, he released the third installment in Bullets Ain't Got No Name, and also his commercial debut single titled, Hussle in the House. After leaving Epic due to financial issues in 2010, he founded his own record label, All Money In. Hussle released his first All Money In Records mixtape on December 2010, titled, The Marathon. In the following year, he released a sequel titled, The Marathon Continues, featuring L.A. rappers Dom Kennedy and YG. In May 2012, he released the single Proud of That, which is a collaboration with Florida rapper, Rick Ross.
On March 30, 2013, he performed at the 2013 Paid Dues festival in California. Hussle has released several songs from his upcoming mixtape, Crenshaw. On October 3, 2013, he released a trailer for the mixtape where he gained attention when he revealed 1,000 copies in less than 24 hours and making $100,000.
His debut studio album, Victory Lap, was released on February 16, 2018 after its numerous delays. It sold 53,000 album equivalent units in its first week, and reached with universal acclaim for critics.
Other Ventures
Hussle founded the Marathon Clothing with partners Civil, Carless, and his brother Samiel, and opened the store on June 17, 2017.
In 2007, he played a small role in the semi-autobiographical film "I Tried", of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Hussle also appeared in the film "Caged Animal" in the year 2010.
Hussle was also actively involved on "giving solutions and inspirations" to young black men like him. He funded and created a co-working environment, which he named as Vector 90. He wanted the youth to have the opportunity to attend classes in science, technology and mathematics at the center. In March 2019, he contacted officials from LAPD to meet and discuss about what he and Roc Nation could do to provide prevention about gang violence in South Los Angeles. The meeting was set to take place on April 1, however, on March 31, Hussle was murdered.
Personal Life
In 2013, Hussle started dating actress Lauren London and had a son together. Hussle had a daughter from his previous partner, while London has a child from previous partner and Hussle's fellow rapper, Lil Wayne.
Hussle was shot at least 10 times in the parking lot of his store Marathon Clothing, on March 31, 2019. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Southern California. Hussle's store remained closed since his death.
A petition was created to rename the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard which is near to Hussle's Marathon Clothing store to "Nipsey Hussle Square", and on the day of his funeral, the council announced that it was set to be renamed Ermias "Nipsey Hussle" Asghedom Square, to honor him and his contributions to the neighborhood.
