Rick Yutaka Fowler was born on December 31, 1988 in Murrieta, California. He went to Murrieta Valley High School and Oklahoma State University. During his high school years, he posted an all-time course record of 62 at Southern California Golf Association (SCGA). He won the SW League Final during his senior year scoring 64-69=133. In the summer of 2005, he won the Western Junior but lost in the US Amateur. On October 1, 2007, he won at the Fighting Illini Invitational organized by the University of Illinois. He scored a 203 (70-63-70). In the same year, he won the Sunnehanna Amateur and Players Amateur.

Fowler won first runner-up in 2009 on the Nationwide Tour in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational. He turned professional after the Walker Cup. Playing at the Albertsons Boise Open on the Nationwide Tour marked his debut as a pro.
