Ridley Scott is an English film director and producer. He started his career in advertising where he developed his skills and talent in filmmaking by creating mini-films for television commercials. Throughout his career, he received several nominations and had won awards including a BAFTA together with his brother Tony, for an Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.
Early Life
Scott was born in South Shields, County Durham on November 30, 1937, to Elizabeth and Colonel Francis Percy Scott. His father was an officer in the Royal Engineers, and when he was still young, his older brother joined the British Merchant Navy. During in this time, his family frequently moved from place to another, and lived in Cumberland, as well as in England, Wales, and Germany.
After the World War II was ended, the family moved back and settled in Hartburn, County Durham, where the industrial landscape of the area seemed to inspire the visuals of Scott's successful film "Blade Runner". When he was a child, he developed his interest in science fiction by reading novels and got influenced by science-fiction films such as the American black-and-white science fiction film in 1951, "The Day The Earth Stood Still", the science fiction horror film "It! The Terror from Beyond Space", and the American black-and-white science fiction monster film, "Them!".
Scott studied at the Royal College of Art in London where he was helping and contributing to establish the college film department. He created a black-and-white short film, "Boy and Bicycle" for his final show in the institution. He secured a job in the BBC as a trainee set designer when he graduated in 1963.
In 1968, Scott and his younger brother, Tony, founded the film and production company Ridley Scott Associates (RSA).
Career
Scott's first feature film as a director was the historical drama film "The Duellists", in 1970s. The film won an award for Best Debut Film and got nominated for the first prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Scott directed the film "Alien", a horror/science-fiction film in 1979, earning more than $104 million worldwide and became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year.
In 1980s, Scott directed the film version of Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", re-titled as "Blade Runner". The film was a commercial failure in cinemas in the year 1982. In the present, the film is known as one of the most influential science fiction films of the history.
After Scott directed a television commercial "1984", to launch Apple Macintosh computer, he made the romantic crime thriller film "Someone to Watch Over Me" and the 1989 action thriller film "Black Rain". Scott also directed the film "Thelma & Louise" in 1991, which was his most commercially-successful film and as a result, he received his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director. In the year 2000, Scott's name bloomed again as his historical drama film "Gladiator" has won a total of five Academy Awards, and became one of his biggest commercial success. In 2001-2008, he directed several films such as the American thriller film "Hannibal", "Black Hawk Down", the historical drama film "Kingdom of Heaven", and more. In July 2009, Scott directed the film "Prometheus", which received positive reviews and earned over $400 million at the box office.
After a number of years, Scott has directed numerous films, including the ones that received negative reviews. His highest-grossing film was the science fiction film "The Martian" in 2014, which grossed more than $630 million worldwide.

His current wife is Giannina Facio, a Costa Rican actress, producer, and has appeared in Scott's several films.
Scott has made several films dedicated to his deceased family members. His older brother, Frank, has died of skin cancer at the aged of 45 in the year 1980. His younger brother Tony, which was also his business partner, died at the age of 68 by suicide on August 19, 2012.
