Tyron “The Chosen One” Woddley is a welterweight UFC fighter. He became the UFC Welterweight Champion for nearly three years since 2016. As of January 2020, he ranked #1 in the UFC welterweight rankings and #15 in the pound-for-pound rankings.
Early Life
Tyron Woodley was born on April 17, 1982 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the eleventh of the 13 children of Sylvester and Deborah. During his time at McCluer High School, he was a two-time state finalist in wrestling. He then attended the University of Missouri, where he became a two-time All-American. In 2005, he graduated from the university with a major in Agricultural Economics.
When he was still an amateur, he won his first fight in 20 seconds. He was undefeated with a 7-0 record.
Early Career
Woodley debuted his first professional fight on February 7, 2009 against Steve Schnider. He won in the first round via submission. It was followed by another win via submission against Jeff Carstens in April 2009.
In the same year, he debuted for Strikeforce, an American mixed martial arts (MMA) organization. After his victory against Sal Woods, Strikeforce signed him to a six-fight deal. He remained undefeated after his seven Strikeforce fights. He was named 2010 Strikeforce Rising Star of the Year. Nate Marquardt defeated him in the vacant Strikeforce Welterweight Championship via KO in July 2012.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Career
Woodley debuted in the UFC in February 2013 with a KO victory against Jay Hieron. In the main event of UFC 201 on July 30, 2016, he defeated welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. He claimed the UFC Welterweight Championship via KO in the first round. The event earned him the Performance of the Night award.
Woodley was able to defend his title from 2016 to 2018. Stephen Thompson (2016 and 2017), Demian Maia (2017), and Darren Till (2018) tried to steal the title. Unfortunately, he failed to defend the title against Kamaru Usman on March 2, 2019.
During his defense fight against Till in 2018, Woodley underwent hand surgery. He dislocated his thumb, tearing three ligaments.

In the co-main event at UFC 25, Usman successfully stole the Welterweight title from him. Usman won via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-45). This ended his nearly three-year reign as welterweight champion.
